Memento Mori
Beatrice, a quick-witted, short-tempered young lady, receives word that her older, mentally disturbed sister, Gabriella, has escaped from the mental asylum at Metanola. Beatrice, who does not trust the asylum doctors’ methods of treatment, heads to Metanola with her two friends, Claudia and Florence, in the hope of reaching Gabriella before they do.
Arriving at the city, Beatrice sees that her task will be harder than she first thought. Metanola is a labyrinthine city of ancient towers, alleys and graveyards, with a vast cathedral standing at its heart. However, Beatrice, Claudia and Florence quickly realise that finding Gabriella will be the least of their problems.
Metanola is gripped by fear. A terrible plague has infected many of the city’s populace, and the streets are eerily quiet. Shadowy figures that are not quite human creep through the haze. And the architecture of the city itself has distorted, twisting streets and buildings into unnatural shapes. Through it all stalk the asylum orderlies, clad in masks and wielding bizarre instruments. They are desperate to reclaim Gabriella, but why?
Beatrice has but one guide in this mad city: a mysterious entity, calling itself the Voice of God, speaks in her mind, guiding her through the twisted streets. As it becomes clear that Gabriella’s escape was not a mindless act, but one filled with dark purpose, events spiral out of control. Trapped between the denizens of the city, the masters of the asylum and the machinations of Gabriella, Beatrice must find an accord with her estranged sister.
